Public Computers

When using a public computer you are especially at risk. Many websites, social networks and email accounts especially, keep your account logged in even when you close down a browser. This may leave your online information at risk of being hacked.

Here are some tips to avoid getting snooped from the use of public computers.

  • Always log out of your accounts. It is not enough to just close the window of your web browser, the browser can still leave you logged in if you don't.
  • Keep a watchful eye, make sure nobody is watching you when you enter your login password to any account. Keep accessing your private information to a minimum, someone may have sneakily installed a key log software to record you password, bank details or credit card numbers.
  • Don't leave your computer unattended. If you have to, close all programs you have used and log out.
  • Do not allow the computer to save your login details. If the web browser asks if you want to save your login details always click "never on this computer".
  • When logging out of websites you have visited make sure to delete your cookies before leaving the computer. To do this, go to the "preferences" or the "internet options" sections of the webs browser and press delete cookies or clear private data. Cookies may allow the next user to view the pages you were browsing.
